Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: The Psychological Underpinnings


Have you ever heard the word compulsion? It is an anxiety disorder wherein recurring thoughts are experienced by patients to do something repetitively. A notable example is hand washing. The said behavior is described as a focused product of one's anxious mind. However. it is not disruptive in nature. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a persistent set of routines, which if  not  accomplished, t caused great distresses. Oftentimes, a compulsive task is assumed to be unreal by a victim or real depending on the given situation as assessed by a neurotic patient. In OCD, the compulsion is truly irresistible. About 1.2  percent of the American population is gravely affected by this treatable psychological disorder. Women are more susceptible to OCD than men. Symptoms become evident during childhood and adolescence stages. Although it is genetic, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a calming type of behavior  Meanwhile people who are suffering from bulemia and anorexia are prone to this kind of an alarming medical concern. Likewise, fear of germs, the need to place things in their appropriate places, the irrational belief that some colors are good or bad are strong indications of a compulsive behavior. Causative factors are unknown. Nevertheless, stress is one of them. Oftentimes, the disorder could manifest if a person is depressed, has a history of physical and sexual abuses, and an experience of a trauma among others. To diagnose, a doctor needs to conduct a blood test . After which, an oral medication is issued by a doctor. For best results, it has to be combined with a series of psychotherapy sessions.
