The Psychology of Aggression

In Social Psychology, aggression is not just a violent, outward expression of anger. It intends to hurt other people while the latter do not think otherwise. Similarly, this kind of negative behavior is perceptive by nature. To explain, its holistic characterization depends on a particular intent of an alleged aggressor. Therefore, its definition can be attributed to a perpetrator’s intent which has to possess a clear-cut distinction. For example, social psychologists view violence as an extreme physical harm such cause injury to a nemesis with death as its ultimate end result. There are other shocking forms of violence like robbery, rape and murder among others. The fundamental types of being aggressive are divided into emotional aggression which involves a small amount of intent or forethought mainly governed by an impulsive emotion.

The other type of aggressive behavior is known as instrumental or cognitive aggression is a planned aggression which is calculating and geared towards getting the attention of a victim and other rewards like money and power. Did you know that it can also be verbal? Concrete examples of these are yelling and name calling. Relational type of aggression is the deliberate harming of an individual’s relationship with others exhibited by gossiping, exclusion from a friendship and silent treatment. In addition, non-verbal aggression is usually in the form of homophobic and racial jokes.

All of these types have the same intent of harming other people. Who are the most common victims of these dangerous actuations? According to research studies by Craig in 1998, children who are prone to bullying are some of them.Great Britain’s adolescent population had reported that almost 20% of them were bullied by spreading rumors which are indeed hurtful. On the part of its poor and helpless victims, its dire effects of smoking and suicide had been linked to females. Today, another type of aggression is at hand. This is legally termed as cyberbullying. These are inflicted to an individual by using modern gadgets or devices such as computers, mobile phones and other similar gizmos. Unfortunately, SUICIDE is the unforgiving consequence of cyberbullying. https://opentextbc.ca/socialpsychology/chapter/defining-aggression/

What are the primary causes of aggression?
There are different triggering factors that might lead to an aggressive kind of behaviour.- Environment, physical issues, psychological problems and social issues.  Physical problems in relation to aggression is caused by physical illnesses wherein the feeling of pain itself causes the aggressor to elicit lashing out tendencies to bitterly express their excruciating pains which make them confused or frightened. The environmental factor of aggression entails the kind of atmosphere that a person is currently experiencing. Noisy, crowded, too hot or cold are examples of predisposing factors leading to an aggressive attitude. Similarly, the psychological tenets of aggression include dementia, hallucinations, paranoia and delusions.  How should we address the problems of those people who are suffering from aggression?

Essentially, it has to discover the root causes of aggression.  After which, try to be in that situation wherein it becomes inevitable.

Next, listen intently to their story once the violent reactions have subsided. To begin with, an eye to eye contact is important.  Then, talk to an aggressor in a low voice. Tell them that you are willing to listen and understand their concerns. Do not ever punish the alleged aggressors.

The main reason for this tip is that an aggressor might be able to remember what he or she did the following day. This is a common scenario among people who are suffering from dementia.
